WebThe supralaryngeal vocal tract, or SVT, determines the phonetic quality of speech sounds by serving as a filter for acoustic energy produced in the larynx. It does this by generating formant frequencies that differentiate vowels and consonants in much the same way as a pipe organ produces different notes.
